You’re thinking about getting a treatment done at a medspa. Maybe it’s Botox for the first time, or you’ve been eyeing a laser treatment for a while. Whatever brought you here, you’re already doing the right thing by asking questions before you book.
Because here’s the truth: not all medspas are the same. The industry has grown incredibly fast over the past decade, and with that growth comes a wide range of quality. Some practices are led by deeply experienced medical teams with years of specialized training. Others…aren’t. And since a lot of medspas can look and feel similar on the surface, from the welcoming reception area to the glossy treatment menu, it’s worth knowing whether the standard of care holds up, too.
This guide will help you understand what to look for in a qualified medspa and how to ask the right questions before you ever sit down in a treatment chair.
This is probably the most important thing to understand going in. Even though a medspa feels like a relaxing, spa-like environment (and it should!), the treatments offered there are medical procedures. Botox, dermal fillers, CO2 laser resurfacing, microneedling with PRP—these involve needles, prescription medications, lasers, and real clinical decision-making. They’re not the same as a facial or a massage.
That’s not meant to be scary. These treatments are incredibly safe and effective when they’re performed by qualified professionals. It just means you deserve to be treated with the same level of care and attention you’d expect from any medical setting because that’s exactly what this is. Performed correctly by a trained professional, they can produce beautiful, confidence-boosting results. Performed incorrectly, or by an under-qualified provider, they can cause bruising, asymmetry, scarring, vascular occlusion, or worse.
This distinction matters because our industry is regulated like a medical practice, and should be treated with the same judgment. Before choosing a medspa, patients need to take time to evaluate its actual clinical standards.
At a properly operated medspa, the team typically includes:
When you’re researching a medspa, always ask questions before you agree to a procedure. The quality of the answers you receive and how readily they’re given will tell you a great deal. Here are five essential questions worth asking:
Look for a board-certified physician, ideally with a specialty that relates to the type of treatments they oversee (such as dermatology, plastic surgery, or internal medicine). Their information should be easy to find. If a practice is evasive about this, consider it a red flag.
Ask specifically. Are they an NP, PA, or RN? How long have they been performing the specific procedure you’re considering? Have they completed manufacturer training or advanced continuing education in aesthetics? The more you know about their experience and background, the more at ease you can feel that you’re in the right hands.
Any qualified medspa will conduct a comprehensive consultation before administering treatment. This is how your provider learns your health history, identifies contraindications, and tailors a plan that’s right for you, not just a standard protocol applied to everyone.
A confident, experienced team will have a clear answer to this. They know their protocols, and they’ll tell you who is available to help if something unexpected happens.
Legitimate injectables like Botox, Juvéderm, Restylane, Sculptra and others are purchased directly from licensed U.S. distributors and stored under specific conditions. If a medspa is offering prices that seem surprisingly low, it’s worth asking why. Authentic products aren’t cheap, and the difference in what you’re receiving can matter a great deal to your health.
The medspa market is competitive, and the temptation to compare on price alone is understandable. But aesthetic medicine is an area where value is not measured well in dollars per unit.
Highly trained, experienced providers command higher rates for good reason. Their skill, their anatomical and certified knowledge, their ability to read a face and create natural-looking results, and their capacity to recognize and manage complications are all things you’re paying for, even if you can’t find them on the services list.
A lower price might reflect a newer provider who is still building their book of clients, or it might reflect a corner being cut somewhere in the clinical chain. Neither is something you want to gamble with when it’s your face and your health at stake.
Beyond credentials and protocols, there’s something a little harder to put into words when seeking out the right medspa, but you’ll know it when you feel it.
A great medspa makes you feel genuinely welcomed and heard, not upsold or rushed. They will offer a thorough consultation that takes your full health history into account. They will educate you about realistic expectations rather than making promises that aren’t theirs to keep. They’ll check in with you after treatments and be genuinely available if you have questions.
Aesthetic medicine, at its best, is a partnership built on trust, on listening, and on a provider who is as invested in your long-term well-being as you are.
We think it’s only fair, since we’re the ones writing this, to be transparent about our own practice.
Our Medical Director is Dr. Greg Gaines, a board-certified plastic surgeon with offices located right alongside ours. He’s genuinely present and engaged in the clinical oversight of our practice, and that’s the kind of physician involvement that actually means something.
Our injectable treatments are performed by PA-C, board-certified physician assistants and NP, APRN, board-certified nurse practitioners. They all hold years of clinical experience and ongoing education in aesthetics.
Our Wellness team is led by Sierra Almengual Anderson, PA-C, a board-certified PA who spent eight years in critical care and internal medicine at UF Health Shands before bringing her expertise to our wellness services.
Our aestheticians are all licensed estheticians. They perform the skincare services, chemical peels and other treatments that fall within their scope of practice. Our Certified Medical Electrologists and CE perform our laser hair removal services and our aesthetic injectors handle the injectables.
We also hold some recognitions we’re genuinely proud of: we’re a top CoolSculpting provider in Florida and #1 in Gainesville/North Central Florida, the #3 SkinPen Microneedling provider in the country, the #7 Hydrafacial provider in the country, the top 20 VI Peel provider in the country, a Top 200 Allergan partner nationwide and Top 10 provider in Florida, and one of Florida’s Best Places to Work y Florida Trend two years running.
